Last month, universities from all over New England converged on the icy waters of southern New England to take part in a regional qualifying tournament for one of the nation’s more unique competitions – concrete canoe racing.

Students from the nation’s top civil engineering programs formed teams to design and build water-ready vessels entirely out of concrete, and race their designs against other schools. The top teams qualify for the national tournament later this year.

The competition, organized by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), was a huge success! The winning boat weighted in at just 120 pounds.

Old Town was proud to support the team from Roger Williams University’s by donating paddles to the cause. Their boat measured 18ft long, weighed in at a whopping 357 pounds, and came in 7th place overall.

Congratulations to RWU’s engineering students, and everyone who participated in this truly special competition.

Your initial lead in to your story said something to the effect of, "you wouldn't believe how much the 1st place boat weighed." I read the story and seem to have missed the rest of the story and stats of the other competitors. Would have been a fascinating story without the abbreviation of details..... Cheers, Dennis
