Early Tuesday morning, I slid my Old Town Predator PDL into a protected body of water. I pedaled up river, looking for signs of feeding fish. The sun was rising and the river was coming alive. A small bait fish skipped across the surface as it ran for its life. I eased the kayak parallel with the rivers bank and made a quick cast. As the lure slowly suspended, I pedaled backwards, aligning the kayak with the bank and preparing to set the hook.
I counted to ten and gave the lure a small twitch. As the lure began to settle, I began counting for the second time. This time I wouldn't make it far into my count before feeling the tap of a solid Speckled Trout. I set the hook and slowly played the feisty fish into my net. After a quick picture, I slid the Trout into the water and watched her disappear into the depths.
